How do the sounds differ?

A family member who recently went on a trip to the Middle East brought me back an aluminum doumbek as a present, and I plan to learn how to play it since it looks like fun. When I started looking into finding some lessons and some more information on the doumbek, I noticed that they also make them out of other materials like copper and ceramic. How do the sounds differ based on the material the drum is made of? Which type of doumbek sounds the best? I am thinking that if I like playing the one I have I might invest in others so I can make a wider range of sounds.
